Microsecunda la apa

with 3 comments

NASA. Ieri.

Spunea Goethe la un moment dat ca “It is bad enough that now one can no longer learn anything for one’s whole life. Our ancestors stuck to the lessons they received in their youth; we, however, have to relearn things every five years if we do not want to fall out of fashion completely.”

Tastatura targului sau “I think, therefore I am; I speak, therefore I am; I write, therefore I am; I publish, therefore I am.” (Raymond Trousson)

Don’t worry people, my ex wife is moving to Colorado, according to my calculations, this large displacement of mass, will gain us about 4 minutes of daylight per day.

Don’t worry folks, I moved a wheel barrow full of rock to the other side of my yard. That should just about get us back on track.

Talk about irrelevant information overload . . . „a millionth of a second” – my God don’t these ‘scientists’ have nothing more productive to do with their time and intelligence!?! . . . work on world hunger, work on peace, work on all the things wrong in this world. But for cryin’-out-loud, don’t fricken bother us with your trivial info. Get a REAL life.

An example of completely misleading science reporting. The continuous change in the length of the day is in response to tidal effects on the Earth. These are one thousand times larger in amplitude than earthquake effects. For instance, on Feb.2, 2010 the completed one spin on its axis 1,670 microseconds (plus or minus 6 microseconds) longer than it took On Jan. 13, 2010. And on Feb.10, 2010 it spun around 1,330 microseconds (plus or minus 6 microseconds) FASTER than it did eight days before. So, don’t sweat the earthquake effects, they are an infinitesimal distraction at best. Ditto the earthquake’s effect on the position of Earth’s pole in space.

Has Al Gore figured out how to make a buck off of this?

Been analyzing these comments all morning trying to determine which of these vacuous commentators is Sarah Palin. Too many close contenders to be certain.

Hope the ‘daylight savings time’ people don’t go crazy with this.

personally I wish they would quit messing with the time and just leave it one way or the other.

we can easily counter the lost time by encouraging everybody to eat fast food today in the united states. if people’s mass increases, a longer day will result. that way, no watch adjustment necessary

I sure hope that those responsible for the GPS satellites are aware of this and correct the time of day. Even a change in microseconds can result in GPS receivers calculating a location with a significant error.

This is really going to mess with the microsecond hand on my watch.

If all 1.3 billion people in China decided to jump at once would that have the same effect?

Now I have to go to bed earlier thanks earth.

definitely a big headline for a little story. Does make you consider the dynamics of the world though. I only ask that 1 billion people move to the equator mon-thurs to speed up my week and then go get drunk in canada to lengthen my weekend

A few microseconds could make a lot of difference especially for satellite based technologies. GPS, missile guiding systems, weather satellites, etc. would have to be adjusted. And just to put it in context: it is estimated (from satellites) that sea levels rise by 3.26mm per year. The Earth moving by 8cm on its axis (causing this 1.26 microseconds time change) is really HUGE compared to the sea level rise. We are in a world where every microsecond, every nanometer count. So this article is very much interesting.

This is extremely worrying. How can I set my watch accurately knowing that every minute all over the world, earthquakes are occurring and dams are being filled and emptied which cause the day to get longer or shorter all the time? Why has Google not yet released a watch that takes all this information into consideration and keeps your time accurate to the microsecond? I’m very disappointed with Google’s failure to do this.
