„Globalisation has linked the fates of the world’s populations without providing political institutions for just distribution between them. The technology that enables financial elites to move money around the world in immensely profitable ways is irrelevant to the living standards of the vast majority of people (…). The world’s richest 200 individuals more than doubled their wealth between 1994 and 1998, to a sum equal to the income of 41 per cent of the world’s population (…). Three of these super-rich were worth the combined national incomes of the 36 poorest countries. While 1.3 billion people live on less than US$ 1 a day, the disparity between the incomes of the richest and the poorest fifth of the world’s population grew from ratios of 60:1 in 1990 to 74:1 in 1997 (UN, 1999, p.3)” (Bill Jordan and Frank Duvell, „Irregular Migration – The Dilemma of Transnational mobility”, Edwar Elgar, 2002, pp. 242-243)
